Goodbye To black And White Color X-Rays Arrive



When thinking about an x-ray it is inevitable to think of a boring black and white image that many times only doctors can decipher, however, this could be about to change. A New Zealand company has developed a new type of scanner that allows making 3D and color radiographs.

With this new technology more detailed and accurate images than black and white images can be made, in this way it will be easier to make a medical diagnosis and the patient will be able to better understand the condition.

The first color radiograph shows a detail of an ankle and a wrist, you can even see the clock.

How does the color 3D scanner work?
The scanner uses a detector that uses color information in the same way that a camera does, but in this case when the shutter is opened it is able to count how many particles arrive at the pixels.

This chip has a unique and customized algorithm to detect the wavelengths while X-rays pass through the different materials of the leather, so it is possible to distinguish between bone, muscle, fat, liquids and tissues.

Next to the scanner is added software that uses the information of the chip to create images in full color and in three-dimensional format.


These first tests of the scanner are used to study cancer, bones and joints. According to its creators, Phil and Anthony Butler of the Universities of Canterbury and Otago in New Zealand, it can soon be used for dentistry and even brain surgery.

It is necessary to wait a few years for this scanner to be used in all hospitals and clinics, at the moment its use is expected to become popular in New Zealand
