Mayan Women Are Saving Thousands Of Stingless Bees From Permanent Extinction

Bees are very important in our society , although there are people who do not think so. These small insects are responsible for pollinating a large part of the fauna in such a way that they continue to survive little by little in nature. But not only bees are important, if not all the insects that are pollinators since without them the environment would end up dying.

In many places the bees are studied to see what is the success rate in their pollination and therefore use it in different greenhouses to make for example fruits or flowers can grow without any problem.

For all these reasons, there are some organizations that know very well the important role that the bee has and its objective is to be able to save it from its permanent extinction.

A clear example of this would be our protagonists today, these Maya women decided to start a new project that is based on the protection and preservation of the bee in the environment , in addition to its natural habitat which is something also important.

The good news of having started this project, through Educampo , is that several positive results have been achieved within the group of Mayan native women. These women, thanks to their empowerment with the environment, have managed to have really surprising results in terms of the preservation of the forest and the protection of the bees that live there.

Surprisingly, the preservation of the forest and the protection of bees are made through a product whose origin is the meliponiculture, a way of raising bees that do not have stings as in your case are several species of bees located in the south of Mexico.

It is 10 years that this project has been in operation, and currently the group of Mayan native women has exceeded 200 people involved in the project.

As explained by Educampo in a given interview, »Mayan native women receive technical assistance and training so they can better learn how to take care of bees and even learn to feed them artificially when plants are not entirely appropriate for them. In addition, these women learn to generate their natural habitat and reproduce them. "

On the other hand, the honey that these bees make allows native Mayan women to make products such as creams, shampoos, soaps and even talcs so that they can be marketed in certain regions of the area.

New entrepreneurs who save the environment

These women are not demonstrating that they can be a role model for the great social change that is being created in their communities, but they have also learned to perform specific jobs that serve to protect a particular endemic species .

In turn, they are also fighting against the gender role that even in 2019 is still very present in a large majority of native communities. With this they demonstrate that women in their communities are much more than housewives , they know how to do many more things and they are capable of everything they propose.

In short, this new project not only aims to preserve and protect bees, but also provides a basis for training native Mayan women to learn and become independent
